On Losing My Father

I was on my journey back to Stockholm from Russia when I got the news that my father was hospitalized. That Russian trip deserves its own story. He had been sick for quite some time, and his stubbornness prevented him from being immediately sent to the hospital.

New Year

It’s right in the new year that he passed away. We even didn’t manage to move him out of the emergency room. My sister said they had tried their best to do so. Well, maybe I should accept that that is the health service level in Indonesia. We did use BPJS, by the way.

Things I Didn’t Know

We didn’t really talk much. Luckily, my mom managed to ‘force’ me to talk with him during our last phone call. That’s revealing. I remember one day, we had an argument over what we should spend money on. I insisted on not spending money on non-productive things (I think it was about television) but instead investing in my sister’s education. I cried when losing my argument with him.

Apparently, his dream was to study abroad. That’s what my mom says. He didn’t say where.

Tour de Java

My mother and father had never been on a proper honeymoon. On that occasion, I took my mom on a Java trip, so to speak. Last year, I took her and my sister to Bandung. And this time, I took her to Yogyakarta, Solo, and Surabaya. My sister was doing Umrah, and we picked her up in Jakarta.
Her favorite moments were the breakfast buffet we always had at the hotels. She thought that they were for free. Without costs. Somehow. But I told her it doesn’t give a good ROI when she just took salad and some bread. Then she insisted on taking some bread with her to our room.

Mom’s First Flight

It was my mom’s first flight. Initially, I booked a Garuda Indonesia flight, but my sister’s Umrah had a problem, so I had to reschedule the flight earlier. That’s why my mom’s first flight was a Lion Air flight. I bet she doesn’t really care.

Farewell, father.
